Photography Definitions

pixels –  a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

image resolution – is the detail an image holds.

megabyte-a unit of information equal to 220 bytes or, loosely, one million bytes.

megapixel-a unit of graphic resolution equivalent to one million or (strictly) 1,048,576 (220) pixels.

gigabyte- a unit of computer information equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes

jpeg- a type of computer file used for storing images; also : an image that is stored as this type of file

bitmap-a representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information, especially the information used to control the display of a computer screen.

exposure-the amount of light per unit area

tiff-a computer file format for storing raster graphics images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general. The format was originally created by the company Aldus for use in desktop publishing.

png- a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression.

White balance- the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo.

Histogram- A diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.

Aperture- A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor.

Shutter speed-exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph.

Depth of field-focus range or effective focus range, is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image

Aperture priority-on a camera mode dial, is a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific aperture value while the camera selects a shutter speed to match, thereby ensuring proper exposure.

Shutter priority-a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure.

Bitmap- A representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information. The information is used  to control the display on a computer screen.

Exposure-a tool to create beautiful photo narratives

Watermarking- originally faint imprints on paper that could only be seen at a specific angle. This process was designed to prevent counterfeiting and is still used today.

optical zoom-on a digital camera, optical zoom is a true zoom feature. It allows you to zoom in (or out) on the subject in the LCD or viewfinder. This will enable you to get a closer view of the subject before taking your picture.

digital zoom- Digital zoom is a method of decreasing the apparent angle of view of a digital photographic or video image. Digital zoom is usually accomplished by scaling portion of the image data (usually center) to have same aspect ratio as well as pixel dimensions compared to the original image.

bracketing-  the general technique of taking several shots of the same subject using different camera settings

light meter-An instrument for measuring the intensity of light, used chiefly when showing the correct exposure in photography.

image stabilization-  a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.

noise- a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance

lag time, the period of time between two closely related events, phenomena, etc., as between stimulus and response or between cause and effect: a time-lag between the declaration of war and full war production. Origin of time-lag Expand

hot shoe, A hot shoe is a mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories.

fisheye being, having, or produced by a wide-angle photographic lens that has a highly curved protruding front, that covers an angle of about 180 degrees, and that gives a circular image

Topic: A little girl did not want to show a little boy her puppy, so the little boy shot her dead.

Title: Boy who shot girl over puppy got gun from unlocked closet, sheriff says

Summary: McKayla Dyer had a puppy, and did not want to show the puppy to the boy who lived by her. The boy got very agitated so he made a plan. He went in his house, got a gun out of the closet, stepped outside, and shot the Dyer. The boy is now charged with murder.

Reaction: I feel bad for all family and friends involved in this situation. The parents of both of these children must be in tons of pain. This has showed me that when I have kids, to always keep a good eye on them. This also showed me that if I have weapons in my house when I am older, I do not need to let my kids know where they are and how they can get to them. This showed me that even the people you are close to can turn their ways in any moment.

World Impact: This will most likely impact the world by showing parents all over the world that they never know what their kid is going to do. This sad moment will probably show everyone that kids are kids and they still need someone watching them with a close eye. I the world is impacted by this and can realize that anyone can snap at any given moment. With this situation happening, I hope the world will think about their kids more. This will show the world that kids and weapons do not mix very well.

Topic: A lady apologizes while in the execution room for killing her husband.

Title: Georgia Inmate Kelly Gissendaner executed after fail appeals

Source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/29/us/georgia-execution-kelly-gissendaner/?iid=ob_article_topstories_pool&iref=obnetwork

Summary: A lady killed her husband and her punishment was to be executed. While the killer(Kelly Gissendaner) is in the execution room, she apologizes for murdering him. Her children try to get her out of the execution but the law enforcements denied their request.

Reaction: I think that the lady deserves her punishment. If I were her children, I would try to save my mom too but she has to take what they give her. What Gissendaner did was wrong, and she deserves a punishment. While being executed, she sang Amazing Grace and I would probably do something like that too. She handled the situation the right way, in my opinion.

World Impact: I think this will show the world that just because someone has done something wrong, that it does not mean they regret it. No matter if they just told a lie or if they committed murder, they can still feel bad about what they have done. This will show the world that Kelly Gissendaner felt bad about killing her husband. This will also show the world that just because you do feel bad for doing something wrong, you cannot always get out of a punishment. This will show the world that even criminals have a heart.

Topic: How us Americans waste so much seafood annually.

Title: America Waste 2.3 Billion Pounds of Seafood Each Year

Source: Discoverynews.com

Summary: Almost half of our edible seafood is wasted each year. Out of the 4.7 billion pounds, 2.3 is never eaten. 63% of seafood goes bad before it is eaten, and is thrown away.

Reaction: I think after reading this, most people will react in a negative way. I think this is crazy. I think there are ways that we can fix this. I also think that most other people will think this too. This makes me think of how wasteful and how we need to do something about it.

World Impact: Most of the world will probably take this in a negative way. People will try to stop the wasting of all of this food and will make ways to fix it. The world’s oceans would have much more marine life if we did not take these animals out of the oceans and the world will probably say something about this. There are many groups and organizations that will address the issue with this. I think many people will think this is very wasteful and that we can do something about it.

Topic: The hot temperatures worldwide.

Title: August Breaks Heat Record Worldwide.

Source:http://news.discovery.com/earth/global-warming/august-breaks-heat-records-worldwide-150917.htm

Summary:This article is about how all over the world it has higher temperatures than normal. This past August has been the hottest in modern history. They think that it has been very hot because of the increase of temperature in the oceans.

Reaction: I feel like this sounds right because the temperature depends on the temperature of the ocean. This definitely affected me when it happened because I did not want to be outside unless I was in a pool. I feel like it is kind of crazy that I experienced the hottest month of August that has been recorded. I feel like this can cause a debate because some people believe it is because of global warming. Some people believe this is because of the change in temperature in the oceans.

World Impact: This will most likely cause some arguments because some believe in different reasons why this has been the hottest August. This will probably show the world that we need to prepare for next August because 2015 beat the 2014 record for hottest August. This will show people that water problems will happen because the hotter it is the more we need water. The hotter it is the less water we have accessible.  Scientist will probably also study more on this topic to see why this is happening.
